Visiting London – Bloomsbury
Questa calda giornata autunnale è l’ideale per andare alla scoperta di uno dei quartieri più affascinanti di Londra: Bloomsbury.
Situato a pochi passi da Covent Garden, con i suoi importanti musei, tra cui il British Museum e il Charles Dickens Museum, i college prestigiosi, i numerosi negozi di libri e i famosi caffè letterari, Bloomsbury è il centro culturale della capitale britannica.
È qui che vissero personaggi del calibro del naturalista Charles Darwin, dello scrittore Charles Dickens e del drammaturgo e scrittore George Bernard Shaw, per citarne alcuni, ed è qui che nacque il famoso Bloomsbury Group, un circolo di intellettuali di cui fecero parte, tra gli altri, anche la scrittrice Virginia Woolf e l’economista John Maynard Keynes.
Ma sentiamo insieme che cosa ha da dirci Helen a proposito del quartiere colto di Londra, grazie a questo video realizzato dalla Oxford University Press per il corso English File.

“Hi, I’m Helen. I’m from Newcastle, in the north of England. Now I live in London. I study here at UCL in Bloomsbury. I love Bloomsbury. It has a lot of great places to eat and drink. My favourite coffee shop is ‘Zee Café’ in Tottenham Court Road. It’s a very friendly coffee shop. The atmosphere is really relaxing. I think it has the best coffee in London.
There are a lot of great restaurants in Bloomsbury, too. This is ‘Planet Organic’. It’s my favourite place to eat. And it has a supermarket. But I don’t always have the money to go here, so I often come to the food market in Goodge Place for lunch. I can get a great meal for about £5 (five pounds). That’s really cheap for London! The food is delicious, too. You can eat food from all over the world.
Bloomsbury is also famous for the British Museum. I sometimes come here in my free time. There are often great exhibitions. At the moment you can see “Anglo-Saxons” and “Ancient Egyptian Mummies”.
A lot of famous writers lived in Bloomsbury. It was the home of Virginia Woolf and Charles Dickens.
My favourite shop is the Oxfam bookshop. You can buy a lot of books here. They’re all very cheap.
Bloomsbury is also near Covent Garden, where there are a lot of great shops.
In this one small area I’m just minutes away from a lot of interesting places.

Il tempo verbale usato nel corso di quasi tutto il video è il Present Simple, perché, in effetti, Helen ci sta parlando di fatti generali, delle sue preferenze, di ciò che fa di solito:
