Sightseeing Vocabulary
– historic centre = the old part of a town or city, with old buildings and streets = centro storico
– castle = a large building with high walls and towers where kings and queens lived = castello
– medieval tower = a tall building or structure from the Middle Ages used for observation and signalling = torre medievale
– cathedral = the main church of a town or city = cattedrale
– monument = a building, statue, or stone built to commemorate a person or an important event = monumento
– square = an open area in a town or city where people can walk and meet = piazza
– fountain = a structure that shoots or pours water into the air = fontana
– statue = a 3D representation of a person, animal, or imaginary creature made of stone, metal, or other materials = statua
– art gallery = a place where people can see paintings and other works of art = galleria d’arte
– building = a structure with walls and a roof where people live or work, or do other activities = edificio
– palace = a very large and beautiful building = palazzo (prestigioso).
– (to) go sightseeing = (to) visit the places of interest in a town or city = visitare i luoghi di interesse di una città
– (to) see = (to) look at or visit a place = vedere, visitare
– (to) explore = (to) travel around a place to discover it = esplorare, andare alla scoperta
– (to) visit = (to) go to a place to see it = visitare
– (to) have a look around = (to) walk around a place and look at it = guardarsi intorno
– (to) get lost = (to) not know where you are or how to get somewhere
– (to) take a taxi = (to) travel by taxi
Guardiamo queste frasi:
– the cathedral, which must be the oldest monument in the city
in altre parole, osservando la cattedrale, Sue e Pete deducono che deve essere il monumento più antico della città;
– the art gallery, which can’t be very old because it’s in a modern building
vale a dire che, siccome la galleria si trova in un edificio moderno, Sue e Pete concludono che non può essere molto antica;
– They think there might be more to see near the river
Quindi, usiamo:
– must quando siamo quasi certi che qualcosa sia vero;
– can’t quando siamo quasi certi che qualcosa non sia vero;

“Sue and Pete are visiting a new city.
First, they go sightseeing around the historic centre and see the castle with its medieval tower and the Cathedral, which must be the oldest monument in the city.
In front of the Cathedral they explore the square with its fountain and statues.
They visit the art gallery, which can’t be very old because it’s in a modern building.
Then they have a look around an old palace with beautiful columns around its entrance. They think there might be more to see near the river, but they get lost and have to take a taxi back to their hotel.
So what did Sue and Pete see?
The castle with its medieval tower, the Cathedral, the square with its fountain and statues, the art gallery and the old palace. And finally they got lost.”
