Hay-on-Wye – the Town of Books

Se, come me, amate leggere, sì, ma amate anche i libri, tenerli in mano, accarezzarne la copertina, sfogliarne le pagine, sentirne l’odore, dovete assolutamente visitare Hay-on-Wye, una splendida cittadina medievale inserita in un paesaggio da favola, al confine con la contea inglese di Herefordshire e a un’ora d’automobile da Cardiff, che ha fatto della vendita di libri usati la sua fortuna, tanto da diventare un vero e proprio paradiso per bibliofili di tutto il mondo ed essere ribattezzata ‘the town of books’.

Non c’è angolo della città, il ristorante, il fioraio, la farmacia, le facciate delle case e persino le mura del castello, in cui non sia possibile acquistare o prendere in prestito libri.
E, tra le pile di volumi accatastate un po’ ovunque, può capitare di imbattersi anche in libri rari e preziosi, come ci racconta questo servizio realizzato da BBC Culture.

“Hay-on-Wye is known as Britain’s ‘town of books’. With over two dozen mostly second-hand and rare bookshops, it is an important destination for book lovers from all over the world.
BBC Culture spoke to Derek Addyman, who is the owner of three bookshops in Hay. He described his passion for books and bookshops and the secrets of finding rare treasure as a bookseller.”

As you watch the video, listen out for the following book-related vocabulary:

• binding = the cover and materials that hold a book together
• end-paper = a sheet of paper, often coloured or ornamented, folded vertically once to form two leaves, one of which is pasted flat against the inside of the front or back cover of a book and the other pasted at the base to the first or last page. Also called  end leaf, end sheet
• (to) flip = turn over, especially with a short rapid gesture
• fore-edge = the outer edge of the pages of a book
• fore-edge painting = a technique of painting a picture on the fore edge of a book so that the picture is visible only when the pages are slightly fanned
• leather-bound = covered in leather
• spine = the back of a book cover or binding, usually indicating the title and author
• volume = book

È vero, ‘never judge a book by its cover’, ma concordo con Derek quando dice: “The magical things in books are usually the stories, but sometimes the magic is also on the outside”.

Oltre che per le sue incantevoli piccole librerie (guardare per credere), Hay è famosa anche per “the Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts”, il più importante festival letterario del Regno Unito. L’evento, giunto quest’anno alla sua trentesima edizione, è patrocinato dal quotidiano The Guardian e ogni primavera richiama migliaia di persone da tutto il mondo, appassionati di libri, scrittori, politici, editori, musicisti, poeti, comici, scienziati, filosofi e anche ospiti illustri come l’ex presidente americano Bill Clinton, che definì Hay-on-Wye la “Woodstock della mente” (the Woodstock of the mind).
