Christmas Stories – A Christmas Carol
“Canto di Natale” di Charles Dickens è probabilmente il più bel racconto natalizio che sia mai stato scritto. Pubblicato oltre 170 anni fa, ne sono stati fatti moltissimi adattamenti per la radio, il teatro, il balletto, la televisione, e, naturalmente, il cinema.
È la storia del vecchio Ebenezer Scrooge, un usuraio che ha fatto del denaro la sua unica ragione di vita e che una vigilia di Natale riceve la visita del fantasma del suo defunto socio, Marley, che lo mette in guardia su ciò che lo aspetta se non diventerà un uomo migliore. Quella stessa notte, Scrooge riceve la visita di altri tre spiriti che lo trasportano in un vorticoso viaggio attraverso il Natale passato, presente e futuro. Si rende conto di essere diventato un vecchio tirchio e odiato da tutti, ma non è mai troppo tardi per cambiare. E a Natale, si sa, qualunque magia è possibile.
Questa versione di A Christmas Carol è chiaramente semplificata, ma la storia è sempre bellissima.
Mr Scrooge is an old miser who doesn’t like Christmas. He only loves making and counting money. But one Christmas Eve he receives the visit from three ghosts (in the real story there is also a fourth ghost, the ghost of Scrooge’s late business partner, Marley).
The first ghost is the Ghost of Christmas Past, who takes Scrooge back to when he was a child at boarding school and his parents left him there alone for Christmas.
The second ghost is the Ghost of Christmas Present, who shows Scrooge the happiness of Christmas and takes him to see the house of a poor but happy family who does not have much to eat but still celebrates Christmas (we know from the original story that that is the family of Scrooge’s clerk, Bob Cratchit). Scrooge can’t understand why a family with so little can be so happy. So probably money is not everything at Christmas…
The third ghost is the Ghost of Christmas Future (in the original story it is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come), who shows Scrooge the funeral of a stingy man who dies alone. Nobody misses him and nobody goes to his funeral. Suddenly Scrooge realises that that is his own funeral and is shocked and upset.
This is not the life he wants, so when Christmas morning arrives, he decides to give a big party. It is Christmas after all!
