Amy: Hi, Lee. I’ve got a new poster for my bedroom. Help me put it up!
Lee: A new poster? It’s not Bro, is it?
Amy: No, it’s the actor Tom Lewis. Oh, he’s really good-looking. And he’s an interesting person too. Do you know what he does in his free time?
Lee: I’ve no idea. What does he do in his free time?
Amy: He helps old people in a hospital. Ask me how often he goes there.
Lee: How often does he go there?
Amy: He goes there three times a week. He lives in an apartment opposite Central Park, in New York.
Lee: Great.
Amy: He’s a fantastic actor! Do you know that last year… Lee! Lee!
Lee: Eh, yeah?
Amy: What’s wrong with you? You never listen to me!
Lee: That’s not true. I always listen to you… Well, I usually listen to you.
Amy: Yeah, right. Well, do you want to go to the movies or not?
Lee: The movies? Eh, yeah, OK!

I think he’s amazing!

amazing = meraviglioso

he’s good-looking
he’s an interesting person
he’s a fantastic actor

– good-looking = di bell’aspetto, bello
– interesting = interessante
– fantastic = fantastico

verbi:
(to) ask = chiedere
(to) know = sapere
(to) listen to = ascoltare
(to) put up = appendere, mettere su
(to) want = volere

sostantivi:
apartment = appartamento (American English)
free time = tempo libero
hospital = ospedale
movies = cinema (American English)

aggettivi:
true = vero
wrong = che non va

avverbi:
opposite = di fronte

Es. I always listen to you = Ti ascolto sempre

SOGG + FORMA BASE DEL VERBO (infinito senza”to”) +  RESTO della FRASE

Es. He helps old people = Aiuta le persone anziane
Es. He lives in an apartment opposite Central Park = Vive in un appartamento di fronte a Central Park

Es. He goes there three times a week = Va lì tre volte a settimana

SOGG + DON’T/ DOESN’T* + FORMA BASE DEL VERBO (infinito senza”to”) +  RESTO della FRASE

* DOESN’T solo per la terza persona singolare – he, she, it.

Es. I don’t listen to you = Non ti ascolto
Es. He doesn’t help old people = Non aiuta le persone anziane

DO / DOES* + SOGG + FORMA BASE DEL VERBO (infinito senza”to”) +  RESTO della FRASE:

* DOES solo per la terza persona singolare – he, she, it.

Es. Do you listen to me? = Mi ascolti?
Es. Does he help old people? = Aiuta le persone anziane?

Quando la domanda è introdotta da una parola interrogativa, una Wh-word, tipo WHAT (cosa), WHERE (dove), WHEN (quando), HOW (come), HOW MUCH (quanto), HOW OFTEN (quanto spesso), WHY (perché), ecc., questa va sempre al primo posto, seguita subito dopo da DO/DOES e il verbo alla forma base:

Es. What does he do in his free time? = Cosa fa nel tempo libero?
Es. How often does he go there? = Quanto spesso ci va?

Attenzione:

Es. What’s wrong with you?

It’s not Bro, is it? = Non è Bro, vero?
Ebbene, quell’“isn’t it?” finale è una Question Tag.

In italiano corrispondono a espressioni tipo: vero? davvero? ah sì? non è vero? o no?  o sbaglio? ecc.

AUSILIARE + PRONOME PERSONALE SOGGETTO

Quindi: Tom is an actor, isn’t he?

Es. Your parents are American, aren’t they?
(frase principale affermativa, Question Tag negativa)
Es. Susan can’t sky, can she? = Susan non sa sciare, vero?
(frase principale negativa, Question Tag affermativa)

Ma se nella frase principale non c’è un verbo ausiliare, allora nella Question Tag dobbiamo usare la forma appropriata dell’ausiliare DO (do/does, don’t/doesn’t, did o didn’t), proprio come faremmo per una qualsiasi altra domanda, “cambiata di segno”:

Es. You speak English, don’t you? (frase principale affermativa, Question Tag negativa)
Es. He lives in New York, doesn’t he? (frase principale affermativa, Question Tag negativa)
Es. You don’t speak English, do you? (frase principale negativa, Question Tag affermativa)
Es. He doesn’t live in New York, does he? (frase principale negativa, Question Tag affermativa)

Attenzione:

è “aren’t I”:
Es: I am late, aren’t I?

Es. Somebody is listening, aren’t they?

Es. Everything is OK, isn’t it?

Comincio io:

My favourite film star is Matthew McConaughey. He is a very good actor and he is also extremely good-looking. He is American and he lives in Austin, Texas.
Why doesn’t he live in Los Angeles like other famous film stars? Because he wants to be close (vicino) to his mum. That’s so sweet (dolce), isn’t it?
He is also a very interesting person. He believes (crede) in the importance of education (istruzione), in fact, he has a foundation (fondazione) to help high-school students.
And he is a temporary professor at University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches a film class.

Who is your favourite actor? Fatemi sapere! j
