Groundwork – Creating Greener Environments

Groundwork London is a charity which repurposes fly-tipped material. They recently opened a workshop and furniture store on the Grahame Park Estate in Barnet. In the first month they took in two tons of items. Some days the number of items they take in is huge, some days not so much, it depends on what people donate or what they find doing refuse collection. Around 3,000 people live in Grahame Park, so carpenters find lots of material to work with. If the items they find are repairable, they repair them. If they assess the damage and think that they can’t repair them, they strip them down and use the parts in the workshop for other projects and nothing gets wasted. The repurposed goods are then sold back to residents at discounted prices. All the stuff they collect would have ended up in a landfill, but, with just minor repairs, they get a new lease of life and can be used again. In this process, Groundwork London also trains up people, who learn new skills while having fun, in a nice and social atmosphere.

verbi

(to) repurpose = adattare a uno scopo diverso
(to) repair = riparare
(to) assess = valutare
(to) strip down = smontare
(to) get wasted = andare sprecato

sostantivi

refuse collection = raccolta di rifiuti
damage= danno
a new lease of life = nuova vita
landfill = discarica pubblica

aggettivi

repairable = riparabile

(to) train up people = formare persone
(to) learn new skills = imparare nuovi mestieri
